Two methods, every field explained. Apply for Instant e-PAN in 10 minutes (free) or through Protean/UTIITSL with Form 49A. Includes AO Code lookup, document requirements, fees, and what exactly to fill in each section.
There are two ways to get a PAN card in 2026. The first is the Instant e-PAN through the Income Tax portal, which is free, takes about 10 minutes, and does not require you to fill any application form at all. The second is the standard application through Protean (formerly NSDL) or UTIITSL using Form 49A, which costs around ₹107 and takes 15 working days but gives you a physical PAN card delivered to your door.
Most people get confused not by which method to choose, but by the actual form-filling process. The Protean online form has fields like “AO Code,” “Source of Income,” and “Representative Assessee” that trip up first-time applicants. This article breaks down every single field across both methods so you know exactly what to enter, what to skip, and what mistakes to avoid.
If you already have a valid Aadhaar with an active mobile number and just need the PAN number quickly, go with Method 1 (Instant e-PAN). If you need a physical card, want to apply for a minor, or if your Aadhaar mobile is inactive, go with Method 2 (Form 49A via Protean).

Before You Start: Documents & Prerequisites
Get everything ready before you open any portal. Half the frustration with PAN applications comes from scrambling for documents mid-form while the session times out. Here is what you need, sorted by the method you will use.
For Instant e-PAN (Method 1)
- Your 12-digit Aadhaar number
- An active mobile number linked with your Aadhaar (you will receive OTP on this number)
- You must not already have a PAN card (holding two PANs is illegal and attracts a ₹10,000 penalty)
- You must be an individual applicant (companies, HUFs, trusts cannot use this method)
That is it. No documents to upload, no photos to scan, no form to fill. The system pulls everything from your Aadhaar record.
For Form 49A via Protean/UTIITSL (Method 2)
You will need three categories of documents. One from each category:
| Category | Accepted Documents (any one) |
|---|---|
| Proof of Identity | Aadhaar card, Voter ID, Passport, Driving Licence, Ration Card with photo, Arm’s Licence, Photo ID issued by Central/State Government, Pensioner Card with photo |
| Proof of Address | Aadhaar card, Voter ID, Passport, Post Office Passbook with photo, latest bank statement (not older than 3 months), utility bill (electricity/water/gas, not older than 3 months), property registration document, Domicile Certificate |
| Proof of Date of Birth | Birth certificate, Matriculation (Class 10) certificate or marksheet, Passport, Driving Licence, Aadhaar card, Pension payment order, Marriage Certificate (for DoB verification) |
Additionally, you need two recent passport-size colour photographs (white or light background, 3.5 cm x 2.5 cm) and a clear scan of your signature on white paper.
Method 1: Instant e-PAN via Income Tax Portal (Free, 10 Minutes)
This is the fastest and cheapest way to get a PAN card in India. The Income Tax Department issues a digitally signed e-PAN in PDF format within 10 minutes. It is completely free. There is no application form to fill. The system fetches your name, date of birth, address, and photograph directly from your Aadhaar record through UIDAI e-KYC.
Here is the exact process, screen by screen:
- Open the Income Tax e-Filing portal. Go to www.incometax.gov.in in any browser. You do not need to register or log in.
- Click “Instant e-PAN” under the Quick Links section on the homepage. This takes you to the e-PAN service page.
- Click “Get New e-PAN.” You will see three options on this page: Get New e-PAN, Update PAN, and Check Status/Download PAN. Select the first one.
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number. Type your Aadhaar number carefully. Tick the “I confirm that” checkbox (this is a declaration that you do not already hold a PAN and you consent to Aadhaar verification). Click “Continue.”
- Read and accept the consent terms. The next page shows the Aadhaar consent terms. Tick the “I have read the consent terms and agree to proceed further” checkbox. Click “Continue.”
- Enter the OTP. A 6-digit OTP will be sent to the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar. Enter it within 15 minutes. You get 3 attempts. If you do not receive the OTP, check your mobile signal and make sure the Aadhaar-linked number is active. Click the “Resend OTP” button if needed. Tick the validation checkbox and click “Continue.”
- Verify your Aadhaar details. The system now displays the details fetched from UIDAI: your full name, date of birth, gender, address, and photograph. Review everything carefully. If there is any error in these details, you cannot fix them here. You will need to update your Aadhaar first through UIDAI and then come back. If everything looks correct, tick the “I Accept that” checkbox and click “Continue.”
- Validate your email (optional but recommended). If your Aadhaar has an email ID linked, the system will ask you to validate it. Enter the OTP sent to that email. If no email is on your Aadhaar, you can add one during this step.
- Done. Save your Acknowledgement Number. A success message appears with a 15-digit Acknowledgement Number. Note this down. You will also receive confirmation on your mobile and email. The e-PAN is usually generated within 10 minutes, sometimes instantly.
How to Download Your e-PAN
- Go back to the Instant e-PAN page on the portal.
- Click “Check Status / Download PAN.”
- Enter your Aadhaar number and verify via OTP.
- If the PAN has been allotted, click “Download e-PAN.”
- The PDF is password-protected. The password is your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format. For example, if your birthday is March 15, 1995, the password is 15031995.
The e-PAN PDF contains your PAN number, name, date of birth, father’s name, photograph, and a QR code for digital verification. It is legally valid for all purposes: opening a bank account, filing your Income Tax Return, applying for a Home Loan or Personal Loan, investing in mutual funds, and CIBIL score checks.
Method 2: Apply via Protean (NSDL) Using Form 49A
Use this method if you want a physical PAN card, if you are applying for a minor, if your Aadhaar mobile is inactive, or if you are applying as a non-individual entity (HUF, company, trust, etc.). The process costs around ₹107 for Indian addresses (including GST) and takes 15 working days for card delivery.
Here is the step-by-step process on the Protean portal:
- Go to the Protean PAN portal at www.protean-tinpan.com. On the homepage, click “Apply Now” under the PAN section.
- Select “Apply for New PAN” as the application type. Under “PAN Application Type,” choose “New PAN – Indian Citizen (Form 49A).”
- Fill the initial registration fields. This is the first screen with basic details:
- Category: Select “Individual” (for most people). Other options are HUF, Company, Firm, Trust, etc.
- Title: Select Mr. / Mrs. / Ms. / Shri / Smt. as applicable.
- Last Name / Surname: Enter your surname exactly as on your Aadhaar or identity proof. No abbreviations.
- First Name: Your first name. No initials.
- Middle Name: If you have one, enter it. Otherwise leave blank.
- Date of Birth: DD/MM/YYYY format. Must match your date of birth proof document.
- Email ID: Enter a valid email. This is mandatory. Your e-PAN PDF will be sent to this email.
- Mobile Number: Enter your active mobile number with country code.
Solve the captcha and click “Submit.” You will receive a Token Number on your email. Note it down.
- Click “Continue with PAN Application Form” to proceed to the full Form 49A. This is where the detailed field-by-field filling begins (explained in the next section).
Form 49A: Every Field Explained
After the initial registration, the full Form 49A opens. This is the screen that confuses most people. There are multiple sections, and some fields seem unnecessarily complicated. Here is what every field means and exactly what you should enter.
Section 1: Mode of Submission
The form asks how you want to submit your documents. You will see three options:
- “Submit digitally through e-KYC & e-Sign (Paperless)” — This is the fastest option. It uses your Aadhaar for identity verification. You do not need to upload any document scans or courier anything physically. You just verify via Aadhaar OTP and e-sign the form digitally. Choose this if your Aadhaar details are correct.
- “Submit scanned images through e-Sign” — You upload scanned copies of your identity, address, and date of birth proof documents. The form is e-signed digitally. No physical courier needed, but you do need to upload document scans.
- “Forward application documents physically” — You fill the form online, print the acknowledgement, paste your photo, sign it, and courier it with physical document copies to the Protean office in Pune within 15 days. This is the slowest option. Use only if the other two are not feasible.
Section 2: Physical PAN Card
The form asks: “Do you require a physical PAN card?” Select “Yes” if you want the plastic card delivered to your address (extra dispatch charges apply). Select “No” if you only want the digital e-PAN (cheaper). The e-PAN is equally valid for all purposes, so getting just the e-PAN saves you money.
Section 3: Aadhaar Details (for Paperless option)
If you chose the paperless (e-KYC) method, enter the last 4 digits of your Aadhaar number. The system will use this for OTP-based Aadhaar authentication later.
Section 4: Full Name
This is critical and the most common source of errors. Enter your name in three separate fields:
- Last Name / Surname: Your family name. Enter the full surname, not an abbreviation. If your name is “Rajkumar Sharma,” enter “SHARMA” here.
- First Name: Your given name. Enter “RAJKUMAR” here.
- Middle Name: Only if you have one. Leave blank otherwise.
Rules to follow: No titles (do not write Shri, Mr., Dr., etc.). No initials (do not write “R. K. Sharma” when your name is “Rajkumar Sharma”). The name must exactly match your proof of identity document. The system uses BLOCK LETTERS automatically for the online form.
Section 5: Name on PAN Card
Below the full name fields, there is a field asking: “Name you would like printed on the card.” This is where you enter the abbreviated or preferred version of your name. For example, your full name is “SATYAM VENKAT MURALIDHAR KRISHNA RAO” but you want the card to show “S V M K RAO.” Enter the abbreviated version here. If you want the full name printed, leave this field blank and the system will use the full name from Section 4.
Section 6: Have You Been Known by Any Other Name?
Select “Yes” only if you have legally changed your name in the past (e.g., name change after marriage, legal name change via gazette notification). If yes, you need to enter the previous name in the fields provided. If you have never changed your name, select “No” and move on.
Section 7: Gender
Select Male, Female, or Transgender. This field applies only to individual applicants.
Section 8: Date of Birth
Already filled from the initial registration. Verify it is correct. This must match your date of birth proof document exactly. Even a one-day difference will cause rejection.
Section 9: Single Parent Declaration
The form asks: “Whether mother is a single parent and you wish to apply for PAN by furnishing mother’s name only?”
Select “Yes” only if your mother is a single parent and you want only her name (not your father’s name) to appear on the PAN card. In this case, the father’s name field becomes optional and you must fill in the mother’s name. If you select “No” (which is the case for most applicants), the father’s name is mandatory.
Section 10: Father’s Name
Enter your father’s full name: Last Name, First Name, Middle Name. Same rules as your own name: no titles, no abbreviations, must match documents. Married women must enter their father’s name here, not their husband’s name. This is a common mistake.
Section 11: Mother’s Name (Optional)
This field is optional for most applicants. It becomes mandatory only if you selected “Yes” for the single parent declaration. You can choose whether you want the mother’s name or father’s name printed on the PAN card by selecting the appropriate radio button.
Section 12: Address
There are two address blocks: Residential Address and Office Address.
For individual applicants who are salaried or have business/profession income, both addresses can be filled. For individuals with no office, fill only the residential address and leave the office address blank.
The residential address fields are:
- Flat / Door / Block No.: Your flat or house number.
- Name of Premises / Building / Village: Building or society name. If there is no building name, enter your village name or area.
- Road / Street / Lane / Post Office: Your road or street name and post office.
- Area / Locality / Taluka / Sub-Division: Your locality or taluka.
- Town / City / District: Your city and district.
- State / Union Territory: Select from the dropdown.
- PIN Code: Your 6-digit postal PIN code.
- Country: Select “India.”
Below the address fields, you will see: “Address for Communication.” Select either “Residence” or “Office” depending on where you want the PAN card delivered and all future correspondence sent.
Section 13: Contact Details
- ISD Code & Mobile Number: Already filled from registration. Verify it.
- Telephone Number with STD Code: Optional. You can skip this.
- Email ID: Already filled. Verify it. Your e-PAN will be sent here.
Section 14: Source of Income
Select the option that best describes your primary source of income. The choices are:
- Salary — Select if you are employed (private or government sector)
- Income from Business / Profession — Select if you run a business or are a freelancer. If you choose this, you also need to enter a Business/Profession Code from a dropdown list (e.g., medical profession, engineering, retail trade, etc.)
- Income from House Property — Select if your primary income is from rent
- Capital Gains — Select if your primary income is from selling property, shares, or investments
- Income from Other Sources — Interest income, dividends, etc.
- No Income — Select if you are a student, homemaker, or currently unemployed with no taxable income
If you are a student applying for PAN to open a bank account or start investing, select “No Income.” This will not affect your PAN in any way. You can file Income Tax Returns with any income source later regardless of what you select here.
Section 15: Assessing Officer (AO) Code
This is the field that causes the most confusion. The AO Code identifies the Income Tax office that has jurisdiction over your area. The code has four parts: Area Code, AO Type, Range Code, and AO Number. The good news is that for the online form, the system auto-fills this for most applicants based on your address and PIN code. If it does not auto-fill, see the AO Code lookup section below.
Section 16: Representative Assessee
Leave this section completely blank unless someone is applying on your behalf under Section 160 of the Income Tax Act. This applies only in specific cases: a guardian applying for a minor, a manager or agent for a non-resident, or a legal representative for a deceased person. For normal individual applications, skip this entirely.
Section 17: Documents Submitted
If you chose the scanned images or physical submission option, tick the checkboxes for the documents you are attaching: Proof of Identity, Proof of Address, and Proof of Date of Birth. If you chose the paperless (e-KYC) option, this section is auto-handled.
Section 18: Declaration & Submit
Read the declaration carefully. It states that you do not already hold a PAN card and that the information provided is correct. Tick the declaration checkbox. If submitting via e-Sign, you will be redirected to Aadhaar OTP for digital signing. Click “Submit” to proceed to the payment page.
How to Find Your AO Code
The AO Code is a combination of four values: Area Code, AO Type, Range Code, and AO Number. It identifies the specific Income Tax ward or circle that covers your residential area. Here is how to find yours:
- On the Protean portal itself: When filling the form online, the system often auto-suggests the AO Code based on your state, city, and PIN code. If the suggestion appears, just select it.
- Using the NSDL AO Code search tool: Visit tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/servlet/AOSearch. Select your state and city. The tool displays all available AO Codes for your area. Pick the one that matches your locality.
- Contact the Income Tax office: If the online tools do not work, call the Protean helpline at 020-27218080. Give them your city and PIN code, and they will tell you the correct AO Code.
For most salaried individuals in cities, the AO Code is usually “Ward” type. For business owners, it might be “Circle” type. If you pick a slightly wrong AO Code, your PAN will still be issued. The Income Tax Department will reassign you to the correct jurisdiction later if needed. So do not overthink this field.
Documents to Upload: Format, Size & Specifications
If you chose the scanned document method (not the paperless e-KYC option), here are the exact specifications for file uploads:
| Document | Format | Max Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proof of Identity | PDF or JPEG | 2 MB | Must be legible, not cropped |
| Proof of Address | PDF or JPEG | 2 MB | Address must be clearly visible |
| Proof of Date of Birth | PDF or JPEG | 2 MB | DOB must be clearly readable |
| Photograph | JPEG | 200 KB | White/light background, recent, passport-size |
| Signature | JPEG | 200 KB | Sign on white paper, scan or photograph clearly |
Use a scanner app like Adobe Scan or CamScanner on your phone for clean document scans. Avoid taking photos at an angle or in low light. Blurry uploads are the number one reason for verification failure.
Payment Options & Fees
After submitting the form, you will be redirected to the payment gateway. Here is the complete fee structure:
| Application Type | Delivery | Indian Address | Foreign Address |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instant e-PAN (Income Tax portal) | e-PAN PDF only | Free | Free |
| Form 49A (Protean) — e-PAN only | e-PAN PDF only | ~₹66 (incl. GST) | ~₹66 (incl. GST) |
| Form 49A (Protean) — Physical card | Physical card + e-PAN | ~₹107 (incl. GST) | ~₹1,017 (incl. GST) |
Payment methods available: UPI (no extra charges, recommended), net banking (₹4 + GST surcharge), debit/credit card (up to 2% bank surcharge), demand draft in favour of “NSDL-PAN” payable at Mumbai.
After successful payment, you receive a 15-digit acknowledgement number on screen and via email. Save this number. You need it to track your application and download your e-PAN.
After Submission: Tracking, Download & Delivery
Tracking Your Application
Visit protean-tinpan.com and click on “Track your PAN/TAN Application Status.” Enter your acknowledgement number. The status will show as “Under Process,” “PAN Allotted,” or “Dispatched” along with the courier tracking number if the card has been shipped.
Downloading Your e-PAN
Once the status shows “PAN Allotted,” you can download the e-PAN for free within 30 days of allotment from the Protean portal. After 30 days, a nominal charge of around ₹8.26 applies for re-download. The e-PAN PDF is password-protected with your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format.
Physical Card Delivery
If you opted for a physical PAN card, it is dispatched via Speed Post or courier to the communication address you provided in the form. Delivery typically takes 15-20 working days from the date of application. You can track the dispatch using the courier AWB number shown in your application status.
How to Apply for a Minor’s PAN Card
PAN cards for children below 18 years cannot be applied through the Instant e-PAN method. You must use the Form 49A route through Protean or UTIITSL.
The process is the same as described above with a few differences:
- The parent or guardian fills the form as the “Representative Assessee” under Section 160 of the Income Tax Act. In the Representative Assessee section (Section 16 of the form), enter the parent/guardian’s name, address, and PAN number.
- The minor’s name goes in the Full Name section (Section 4).
- For Source of Income, select “No Income.”
- Documents required: the minor’s birth certificate (for date of birth proof), the parent/guardian’s identity proof, and the parent/guardian’s address proof.
- The photograph should be of the minor.
- The parent/guardian signs the declaration on behalf of the minor.
Once the minor turns 18, they will need to submit a request to update the PAN with their own identity documents, photograph, and signature.
7 Reasons PAN Applications Get Rejected
- Name does not match across documents. If your identity proof says “Rajkumar Sharma” but you typed “Raj Kumar Sharma” on the form, the verification team will flag the mismatch. Copy the name character-for-character from your document.
- Already holding a PAN card. The system checks against the existing database. If you already have a PAN (even one you have forgotten about), the application will be rejected. Use the “Know Your PAN” facility on the Income Tax portal to check before applying.
- Date of birth mismatch. The DOB on your form must exactly match the DOB on your proof document. A difference of even one day results in rejection.
- Blurry or illegible document uploads. Photos of documents taken at an angle, in poor lighting, or with text that is not clearly readable will be rejected during manual verification.
- Photo does not meet specifications. The photograph must have a light/white background, front-facing, with no shadows or glare. Dark backgrounds, selfies, or group photos (even cropped) are rejected.
- Incomplete address. Missing PIN code, state, or district will cause rejection. Fill every address field completely.
- Physical documents not received within 15 days. If you chose the physical submission option, your printed acknowledgement and documents must reach the Protean Pune office within 15 days of online submission. After that, the application lapses and the fee is not refunded.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for PAN without an Aadhaar card?
For the Instant e-PAN method, Aadhaar is mandatory. For the Form 49A method via Protean or UTIITSL, Aadhaar is not strictly required for the application itself, but you will need it for PAN-Aadhaar linking afterward (which is mandatory). You can use a passport, voter ID, or driving licence as your identity proof on Form 49A.
How long does it take to receive the PAN card?
Instant e-PAN takes 10 minutes. The Form 49A route via Protean takes 15-20 working days for physical card delivery. The e-PAN (digital version) from Protean is usually available for download within 3-5 working days of application.
I do not have any income. Can I still apply for PAN?
Yes. Students, homemakers, and unemployed individuals can apply for PAN by selecting “No Income” in the Source of Income field. PAN is needed for many financial transactions beyond income tax filing, including opening a bank account, buying property, or starting mutual fund investments.
What is the AO Code and what happens if I select the wrong one?
The AO Code identifies the Income Tax ward or circle that has jurisdiction over your area. If you select a slightly incorrect AO Code, your PAN will still be issued. The Income Tax Department will reassign you to the correct jurisdiction later. It will not affect your PAN card or its functionality.
Can I apply for PAN online from my mobile phone?
Yes. Both the Income Tax e-Filing portal (for Instant e-PAN) and the Protean portal (for Form 49A) work on mobile browsers. Use Chrome for the best experience. The Instant e-PAN method is particularly smooth on mobile since there are no document uploads required.
Is the e-PAN accepted for bank account opening and Home Loan applications?
Yes. The e-PAN is a digitally signed document issued by the Income Tax Department. It is accepted by all banks, NBFCs, mutual fund companies, and government agencies for KYC, Income Tax Return filing, Home Loan applications, Personal Loan applications, Credit Card applications, and Demat account opening.
What if my Aadhaar mobile number is not active?
You cannot use the Instant e-PAN method or the paperless (e-KYC) option on Protean without an active Aadhaar-linked mobile. Your options are: (1) visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre to update your mobile number on Aadhaar (free service, usually done in one visit), or (2) use the “Submit scanned images through e-Sign” or “Forward documents physically” options on the Protean form, which do not require Aadhaar OTP.
Can NRIs apply for PAN?
Yes. NRIs with Indian citizenship use Form 49A. The process is the same, but the physical PAN card dispatch fee is higher (~₹1,017 including GST) for foreign addresses. NRIs can also use a valid Indian passport as both identity and address proof.
I submitted my application but the acknowledgement email did not arrive. What should I do?
Check your spam or junk folder first. If it is not there, visit the Protean portal and use the “Track your PAN/TAN Application Status” tool with your token number (which appears on screen immediately after form submission). You can also call the Protean helpline at 020-27218080 for assistance.
Applying for a PAN card is genuinely one of the simpler government processes in India right now, especially if you go with the Instant e-PAN route. Ten minutes, zero cost, no paperwork. For those who need the physical card or are applying for a minor, the Form 49A route through Protean is straightforward once you understand what each field is asking for. The key is getting your documents in order before you start, double-checking every name and date against your proof documents, and choosing the paperless e-KYC option whenever possible.
